James Owens El “The Jimmy” February 24, 1952 – July 23, 2025

Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, James Owens El—affectionately known as “The Jimmy”—was a man of profound intellect, unwavering loyalty, and boundless love for his family and community. He passed away surrounded by those who cherished him, leaving behind a legacy of wisdom, strength, and compassion.

James was the devoted father of Inshallah "Big Baby" and Irraheem, and the beloved father-in-law of Carolton “Bubbles.” He was a proud grandfather to Jermol, Asia, Marlon, Carlton III “Woodie,” Jalil, and Wakil—each of whom he guided with pride and joy.

He was the cherished son of the late Edward “Eddie” Owens and the late Ruth Cooper. James is survived by his brothers Edward II “Junie Boy,” Ellsworth, and Jerome; his sisters Jean “Teenie-Weenie” and Gloria; and his brother-in-law Harrison.

He is now reunited in peace with Mary, the mother of his daughters; his grandson Duane; and his late siblings Carolyn, Josephine, Gerald, Eugene, Rino, and Avon—as well as his loving sister-in-law Lueseta.

James was also blessed with a large family, including many nieces and nephews—among whom Omar “O” held a special place in his heart.

Lifelong friendships were sacred to James. His bond with childhood friend Billy Adams-Bey stood as a testament to loyalty and trust that endured throughout his life.

Known for his encyclopedic knowledge of the law and the U.S. Constitution, James could recite legal statutes and historical references with striking precision. A natural teacher and legal mind, he was a constant source of strength, wisdom, and insight to those around him.

Above all, James will be remembered for his devotion to family, his fierce integrity, and his remarkable ability to uplift others through love and knowledge. His presence was a blessing. His absence is a deep loss.
