It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Major John Michael Holihan, age 83, who departed this life peacefully at home on May 24, 2026. John was born on June 24, 1942, in Syracuse, New York, the son of John and Ethel Holihan.
John proudly served his country for 23 years in the United States Army and Army National Guard, completing two tours in Vietnam. During his distinguished military career, he was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, and three Meritorious Service Medals, reflecting his courage, dedication, and sacrifice.
Beyond his military service, John remained deeply involved in the veteran community through his longtime fellowship with the Otter Caribou Association. He and his wife, Debbie, were also devoted members of the Old Glory Harley Owners Group for many years, sharing a love of travel and the open road. John was especially proud of having ridden to all four corners of the United States on his Harley; not even a serious accident in Canada could deter him. After recovering, he returned to the site of the accident and completed the journey. A true Iron Butt rider, he cherished his many trips to Sturgis. In retirement, he liked to joke that he was a “test pilot for La-Z-Boy,” enjoying some well-earned rest after a life of hard work and adventure.
John will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his quick wit, friendly demeanor—he truly never met a stranger—his unwavering love of country, and his deep devotion to his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ethel Holihan; his brothers, David and Mark; and his son, John Michael Jr.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Debra A. Holihan; his loving sister, Linda St. Onge and brother-in-law Wes; loving son, Scott, and his wife, Lorrie; his loving daughter, Kerry, and her husband, John; his grandchildren, Taylor, Robbie, Devin, and Kyle; Taylor’s husband, Tim; and his great-grandchildren, Payton, Quinn, and Jaxson. He is also survived by his loving daughter, Veronica. Additionally, he is survived by his oldest and dearest friends and travel companions, Bill and Sharon Booker.
Viewings and services will be held on May 31, 2026, at McCully, Polyniak and Collins Funeral Home, P.A 3204 Mountain Road, Pasadena, Maryland. Viewings will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with a service to follow at 7:30 p.m.
