Joseph Grunder, Sr

August 31, 1943 — September 1, 2021

Joseph Alan Grunder, Sr. (Joe), beloved husband to Linda Grunder, passed away peacefully at his home in Pasadena on September 1, 2021 after a recent diagnosis with cancer.  Joe was born on August 31, 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland.  His parents, Frank Grunder Sr. and Gertrude Grunder (nee Nelligan) and his brother Frank Grunder Jr. preceded Joe in death.  His sister, Lynda Koch (nee Grunder), survives Joe.

Joe was a kind, gentle and humble man who loved professional wrestling, fishing and shooting pool. He was a man of few words, but he always had a kind word for a friend or better yet, an offer of some candy or snacks he kept stashed in the house whenever his sweet tooth kicked in. Black licorice, jujyfruits and pretzels were among his most-stocked favorites. Professionally, Joe enjoyed a long and tenured career at the Department of Defense, from where he retired after 42 years of service. In his retirement, he found much joy from spending more time with his beloved wife, Linda, grandkids, days on the boat and enjoying the company of his best pal and dog, Jake. In October 2009, Joe underwent a heart transplant that granted him an additional 12 healthy years to spend with those he loved most; time for which his family and friends are eternally thankful to have had together. And finally on August 31, 2021, family, friends and loved ones were able to gather at his home to celebrate his birthday one last time; he turned 78. For those who were fortunate to know Joe, he will be greatly missed, but his legacy will live on through the rich memories he leaves behind, in addition to the lives of his children and grandchildren.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Linda Milliken Grunder (nee Shuey), five sons and their spouses and seven grandchildren; Joseph Grunder, Jr. of Glen Burnie; Lenny and Nicole Milliken of Crownsville and their children Natalie, Luke and Lawson; Shawn Milliken of Pasadena and his children Dalton and McKenna; Alan and Jennifer Grunder of Pasadena and their children Brooke and Eden; and Jason and Lisa Grunder of Pasadena and their children Brady and Kali.

The family will host a Celebration of Life for Joe (location and time to be determined) to share stories and remembrances with family and friends.
