Crownsville – Mary “Jeanne” Smith, 86, passed away Monday, August 28th, 2023, at the Hospice of the Chesapeake facility in Pasadena, MD after losing her battle with dementia. She was born February 2nd, 1937, in St. Mary’s County, MD, the daughter of Paul and Elizabeth Birch.
Jeanne graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Annapolis, MD, class of 1955. Following graduation, she met and married William Joseph Smith and settled in Crownsville, MD where she lived on a street named for her father for 66 years. They celebrated 50 years of marriage until his passing in 2007. Jeanne was a loyal member of Our Lady of the Field’s Catholic Church, attending mass regularly, volunteering at funeral luncheons, taking care of plants, and helping wherever needed. After 25 years with the United States Postal Service, she spent time traveling, exercising, gardening, crafting, and spending time with family and friends. She loved participating in the County Fair often winning ribbons for her many entries. Her extensive travels throughout the United States, Europe, Central and South America included the Grand Canyon, Acadia National Park Maine, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Canary Islands, Mexico, Panama, and the Galapagos Islands to name a few.
Jeanne is survived by her children William P Smith and wife Betty of Severn, MD, Gerald P Smith and wife Laura of Glen Burnie, MD, Janet E Hawkins and husband Steve of Odenton, MD and Laura J McWee and husband James of Pasadena, MD along with her 10 grandchildren, Rachael Riviere, Billy Smith, Jonathan Waters, Amy Jordan, Jennifer Childress, Rebecca McWee, Mitchell Hawkins, Kristi Vogelsang, Tyler Smith and Natalie Hawkins along with 13 great grandchildren.
Family and friends may visit on Monday, September 11th from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at McCully Polyniak & Collins Funeral Home in Pasadena, MD where funeral services will take place on Tuesday, September 12th at 10am. Interment to follow at MD Veteran’s Cemetery, Crownsville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake or the SPCA of Anne Arundel County.
