Richard Warren Martens, Jr., 76, of Seaford, Delaware, passed away on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, surrounded by love.

Richard was born on March 31, 1949, in Davenport, Iowa, to the late Richard and Dorothy Martens. He grew up in Davenport before answering the call of service during the Vietnam era. He proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served his country with distinction for 20 years. Rising to the rank of Master Sergeant, and known as “Dick” among his fellow servicemen, he built a career that took him around the world and earned him numerous decorations for valor, service, and leadership. Among them were the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valor, as well as honors recognizing his good conduct and service in Vietnam and Korea, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross. His final station was at Fort Meade, Maryland, where he retired. A fitting close to a career that stood as a point of pride and a testament to his dedication, discipline, and love of country.

Following his military retirement, Rick went on to own and operate a general contracting business with his brother, David. Later, he continued his career with Worcester County Public Schools serving as the Assistant Construction Manager, where he was known for his strong work ethic and willingness to help others. He officially retired at the age of 74, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and commitment.

Richard married Sachiko Matsugawa on May 16, 1972, while stationed abroad in Naha, Okinawa, Japan. Their 53-year marriage was built on love, resilience, and an unwavering devotion to one another. Together they raised two children, Christopher Martens (Shirley) of Evans, GA, and Kathleen (Thomas) Dymond of Pasadena, MD, and were blessed with six grandchildren: KaraLynn and Cassidy Eckles, Allison Dean, Kyler Dymond, and Reagan and Vivian Dymond.

Rick’s life beyond his careers was filled with passions that brought him joy and connection. During his years in the Air Force, he had the opportunity to travel the world, experiencing new cultures, exploring other countries, and attending many concerts overseas that deepened his lifelong love of music. He carried with him a deep love of his country, proud of the service he gave and grateful for the freedoms it represented. Rick also found joy in history, travel, birdwatching, days at the beach, and he cherished laughter shared with friends. Most of all, he treasured time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He never missed a moment - school events, soccer and lacrosse games, long hours of dance recitals and competitions, with the annual Nutcracker performance holding a special place in his heart, and Christmas light drives that became a beloved tradition. No matter the occasion, Rick always showed up.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Sachiko; his children and grandchildren; his brother, David Martens; his sister, Julie Martens, and eight nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Dorothy Martens.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather at McCully Polyniak & Collins Funeral Home, P.A., 3204 Mountain Road, Pasadena on Thursday, September 18, 2025, from 2pm-4pm and 6pm-8pm. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 19, 2025, at 11am. A private burial with full military honors will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery, in recognition of his faithful service to the nation.

Rick will be missed deeply by all who knew and loved him. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the family he so dearly loved.
