Shirley Cloud

July 30, 1936 — December 8, 2018

Shirley Elizabeth Cloud, 82, of Pasadena passed away peacefully on December 8, 2018, surrounded by her family.  Shirley was born on July 30, 1936 in Baltimore to the late Michael and Theresa Chick. After graduating from Southern High School, she worked for USF&G prior to marrying her late husband James Cloud in 1962.  In the following years they had three children, Sharon, James, Jr., and Michele. After spending many years as a homemaker and raising their children, she reentered the work force with the Anne Arundel County Board of Education, retiring in 1996 after nearly 20 years.  During those years, she went back to school to earn her Associate’s degree in Business Administration at Anne Arundel Community College.

First and foremost, Shirley was a family-oriented person - a loving mother, grandmother, and sister. Shirley enjoyed hosting large family gatherings throughout the years at their home on the Magothy River. She was a Sunday School teacher, Girl Scout leader, PTA member, and church volunteer. She was also a proud member of the Red Hat Society, along with her two sisters.  Additionally, Shirley enjoyed camping, traveling, reading, and taking bus trips with her late husband. She will always be remembered for her selfless and caring ways; always willing to put family and friends before herself.

Shirley is survived by her three children, Sharon Bennett (Butch) of Goldsboro, NC, Michele Tharp (Al) of Pasadena, Maryland, and a son, James M. Cloud, Jr. (Donna) of Pasadena, Maryland.  She is also survived by her brother, Michael Chick (Bea), sister Margaret Burr (Ron), brother-in-law James Backoff, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by her parents, husband, brother, David Chick, and sister, Mary Ellen Backoff.

Family and friends are invited to call at the family owned and operated McCULLY-POLYNIAK FUNERAL HOME, P.A. 3204 Mountain Road (PASADENA) on Friday December 14, 2018 from 3-5 & 7-9 PM. A funeral service will be held on Saturday December 15, 2018 at 11 AM. Interment follows at Cedar Hill Cemetery at noon.

Shirley was a long time member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to St. Andrew’s, 7859 Tick Neck Road, Pasadena, MD 21122.
