William Albert Tankersley, Sr., beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many, passed away peacefully at home on October 30, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Bill, known to his friends, fellow law enforcement officers, and members of his community as “Tank,” was a man of many virtues, especially honesty and integrity. He possessed a magnetic personality and always greeted everyone with a big smile. Many will remember his enormous bear hugs and infectious laughter.
Bill dedicated 38 years of his life to law enforcement. He served 30 years with the Anne Arundel County Police Department, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant, followed by eight years with the Anne Arundel County Sheriff’s Office, where he served as a Major. Throughout those years, he formed many lasting friendships and earned the respect of those with whom he worked.
Outside of law enforcement, Bill was an avid fisherman and gardener. He was a proud member of the Kent Island Fishermen’s Club, the Kent Island Elks, the Kent Island Yacht Club, and the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, Thomas H. Tankersley, Jr., and Mary Jane Colburn. He was raised in Ferndale, Maryland, and graduated from Andover High School. He continued his education at Anne Arundel Community College and the Southern Police Institute at the University of Louisville.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 48 years, Mary WhaleyTankersley; his son, William Tankersley, Jr.; his daughter, Lisa LynnThomas; and his daughter, Kristel Marie Kiernan, and her husband, Joshua Kiernan. He is also survived by his brother, Thomas Tankersley, his brother-in-law Joseph Whaley and sisters-in-laws Maureen Whaley and Fran Whaley.
His sister-in-law, Maureen Whaley, was an incredible help and source of support in caring for Bill during his final days, a kindness for which the family is deeply grateful.
Bill and his brother Tom shared many special times together, enjoying car shows, fishing, crabbing, and watching Mecum Auto Auctions on television.
His greatest pride and joy were his family, especially his seven grandchildren: Ryan, Hunter, Logan, Taylor, Ashley, Liam, and Connor. He took tremendous pride in watching his grandsons, Liam Allen and Connor Allen, participate in their sporting events and rarely missed a game. His love for his grandchildren was immeasurable.
Bill was also blessed with six great-grandchildren. He was heartbroken by the loss of his great-grandson, Walker, as well as his brother-in-law, Jim Whaley.
Bill and Mary enjoyed traveling, taking many cruises and vacations throughout the United States with Jim and Fran Whaley. Jim and Bill spent many hours crabbing and fishing in their favorite spot.
He also leaves behind six nephews; Tom, Craig, Brian, James, Chris and Karl and one niece Karen who loved and admired him.
As we remember Bill, let us celebrate a life well lived. His life was characterized by love, kindness, honesty, laughter, a passion for fishing, and gardening and an unwavering commitment to his family and friends.
His spirit will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Rest in peace, Bill. Your laughter, your love, and the memories you created will live in our hearts forever.
