Angelo Julian Barnabae (1993 - 2020)

“Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass; it’s about learning to dance in the rain”

Saying farewell to our son AJ today is one of the hardest things we ever had to do. Words cannot describe the sorrow and loss our family is feeling. We would like to tell you of the beautiful soul we called AJ that we knew for these to few years. He was pure of heart and had great sensitivity for the world around him. He had a way with people that made them feel comfortable around him and infected others to gravitate toward him. Because AJ knew how to dance in the rain.

AJ was a wonderful, sweet boy and as he grew into a little boy, he was loving, funny, and kind. AJ always took things in his stride. He loved to sing Disney songs and show tunes and one of my favorite memories is of a 4-year-old AJ climbing to the top of our living room couch to sing “Somewhere Out There” out the window. Or when he got his little brother and his cousin to cover themselves with green chalk and group sing “Feed me”, from Little shop of horrors movie. AJ never stopped singing.

AJ had such a big heart. Not only was he a loving son and brother, he was a kind and giving friend. he was able to empathize with people on special level. He freely gave his love to all those around him. AJ loved to make people laugh and would go out of his way to help his friends. Even during his most difficult times AJ was willing to extend a helping hand. If a friend came to him in need, he did his best to help. AJ would always give so much of himself, accepting everyone at face value. AJ never stopped giving.

As AJ grew from a boy into a teenager, I could see the man that he would become - strong, steadfast and assured. He loved his family and was a devoted big brother the Alex, Chris and Nick. He loved holding his younger brothers when they were babies and spent a lot of time with them. Taking his job as big brother very seriously. He loved his older sister Vivian and would often just plop down in her lap to use her for a chair. She never minded. We all loved him. And as he got older, he was a gifted leader; younger kids would gravitate to AJ wanting his attention. AJ was never unkind when asked to play always very patient and fun. AJ never stopped trying to be a friend.

AJ also loved his sports. From the age of 5, he was a part of the Rebels Youth Sports Organization. AJ was a gifted athlete and played football, wrestling, lacrosse and baseball. But it was football that was his passion and that he excelled in. He never complained about going to practice, he would race out of the car and down to the field to be with his teammates. When he helped lead his team to the state championship, we were so proud. He was always competitive, but humble and supportive to all his teammates. AJ never stopped trying.

Our son was a dreamer. He loved to draw and was a gifted artist, his favorite things were to create different kinds of dinosaurs and monsters. He would spend hours perfecting his drawings making sure each was just the way he imagined it. AJ loved to write, he wrote stories, poetry and songs. Many nights we would sit together, and AJ would create a story out of air. His imagination was brilliant, and he loved to dance. Sometimes he would just start singing something he had made up in his head and dance around the room and if you were close, he would pull you into his dance. He was a leader. He could enter a room and brighten it with his smile, his attitude, or just his presence. AJ never stopped dreaming.

AJ chose to live life with laughter, with love. He chose to share his light to anyone who was open and willing to enjoy the simple things in life with him. And he shared laughter, AJ showed that anyone can laugh for as long as they’re open to it. Open to the silly, the seemingly mundane. AJ taught us that. He loved watching reruns of SNL and Will Ferrell, Chris Rock, Chris Farley, Adam Sandler movies. We will miss that big smile that melts our hearts and that loud infectious laugh that made everyone want to laugh along with you. How you loved to laugh.

We are here with a broken heart. The loss of a child is something we should never have to prepared for. We weren’t ready, we could never be ready. He had so many dreams and so many talents.

AJ, I love you with all my heart; as we remember your life, I realize how much you have taught me. Thank you for the honor of being called your Mom and Dad we look forward to seeing you again.

Rest in peace; and never, never stop singing and dancing and dreaming never stop laughing.

Goodbye, my son. You will live in our hearts forever
